Cruisers Pizza Bar and Grill is a popular award-winning sports bar in Newport Beach. Cruisers’ fun atmosphere is highlighted by its diverse entertainment options, from 25 TVs inside where you can catch any sports game you desire, to the party patio with games such as beer pong and Jenga. Cruisers caters to a diverse clientele and can feel like a different restaurant depending on where you sit. There are several different sections, and you should try all of them to get the full Cruisers experience. With such a vibrant atmosphere, it’s no wonder professional athletes often stop by when they’re in town. Get your pizza fix with their stuffed crust pizza, which is special to this location. You’d have to visit Chicago to have anything like it.

Native Knowledge: The outdoor patio can fit over 50 people and still feel comfortable. The entire restaurant can fit over 200 people, but due to the layout, it will never feel crowded.

Cruisers Pizza Bar Grill opened just last year, but it already has an outstanding reputation for its food, service and ambiance.

Located near the Balboa Pier, Cruisers captures the "fun, easy-going nature of the area" that appeals greatly to locals and tourists. With televisions aplenty, multiple happy hours nightly, a specialty drink menu and no fewer than 10 beers on tap, Cruisers is the ideal spot to catch professional sporting events with co-workers or large groups.

Oh, and it happens to serve pretty good pizza, too.

Yelp reviewers rave about Cruisers' Chicago-style pies, which can be made with thin, original-stuffed or large-stuffed crust. The restaurant, which comfortably seats 172 guests, features a half-dozen ready-made pizzas and a build-your-own option. It also offers gluten-free pizza.

Food choices for patrons who prefer smaller meals include traditional appetizers – wings, nachos, chicken tenders and more – sandwiches, pastas and salads.

Between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, Cruisers hosts a champagne brunch for $9.99.

Alex Petrosian is a Green Bay Packers fan. Bud Wierenga is a Chicago Bears fan. If you know football rivalries, you know they make an unlikely partnership.

But the former bartenders went into business together and opened Cruisers before the start of the 2014 pro football season, and their sports bar has been a hit ever since.

"What really put us on the map is we brand ourselves as a Bears and Packers bar," Petrosian said. "No one had ever heard of that. People are really excited to have the rivalry in-house."

It didn't hurt that Cruisers has a 170-inch big screen to go along with 30 other TV monitors to accommodate big sports days. That could be NFL Sundays, college football Saturdays and any game the Chicago Blackhawks played on their way to the 2015 Stanley Cup championship.

One other draw is Cruisers' ability to play audio for multiple games at the same time.

"We have four zones in the bar," Petrosian said. "You can hear four different games in four different zones, and they don't conflict with each other."

It's all about atmosphere at Cruisers Pizza Bar Grill, with the restaurant's proximity to the beach and Balboa Pier appealing to locals and out-of-towners alike. Cruisers offers two separate happy hour periods every day, from 3 to 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight.

The beer menu is strong for the average Joe, and the rotating craft handles draw the local brew aficionados, also offering $12 beer flights if you want to try a little bit of everything. The Cruisers Mojito is a must-try and is offered in mango, watermelon, strawberry, kiwi and peach flavors. Like the rest of the extensive specialty drink menu and draft beers, all cocktails can be upgraded to a 24-ounce schooner. Happy hour specials include $5 U-Call-Its and $2 off all beer, wine and specialty cocktails.

In terms of food, the big question ultimately comes down to thin and crispy or stuffed pizza. Cruisers specializes in Chicago-style pizza, a perfect meal after a long day at the beach.

And while you wait for a pizza pan of cheesy goodness, step outside to the patio for a game of jumbo jenga.

Cruisers has been open only since last summer, but it's already making a mark among O.C. burger lovers.

Owners Alex Petrosian, 38, and Bud Wierenga, 33, said the burgers are from three meats blended together with added spices for a unique flavor. The restaurant serves beef sliders and three types of burgers.

The Cruiser burger is topped with bacon, jalapeños, spicy mayo and a fried egg, in addition to traditional toppings. The ABC burger, which has become a big hit with customers, comes with avocado and smoked Applewood bacon, while the cheddar burger is exactly what it sounds like.

This beach hangout/sports bar a block from Balboa Pier has been packing in crowds since it opened in summer 2014. One reason may be its fresh-cut french fries – soaked in water, flash-fried, then fried again, creating a crispy fry that's soft on the inside.

On a busy Saturday, the restaurant sells about 150 orders, says co-owner Bud Wierenga. He credits their popularity to using simple, quality ingredients.

"It's not an overly complicated fry. We keep it to the basics," he said.

Looking for something out of the ordinary? Try the cinnamon sweet potato fries, double cooked and lightly dusted with cinnamon. An order of either fry is $3.95.

Cruisers is open until 2 a.m. nightly.

Taste of Balboa

For locals, the Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race is the unofficial start to the boating season in Newport Beach.

For us, it means it’s time to celebrate the race with the Balboa Village Fest and Taste of Balboa on Sunday, April 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Balboa Village.

The Taste of Balboa features a handful of local restaurants offering small (or sometimes large) bites of their signature dishes.

In addition to the food, there will be live music performed by famous U2 cover band, Hollywood U2 (we’ve seen them, and they’re terrific!), hands-on activities for kids at ExplorOcean, chalk art, Newport to Ensenada yacht tours, and a formal ceremony unveiling a commissioned Newport to Ensenada painting.

But back to the food. Among the restaurants participating this year are Cruisers Pizza Bar Grill, Cucina Alessa, Harborside Restaurant, Mint Leaf Thai Cuisine, Newport Landing Restaurant, Ruby’s Diner, Sessions West Coast Deli, and Slapfish.

We’ve been to all of them and truly look forward to sampling their dishes. Last year, Cruisers unveiled its deep dish Chicago pizza at Taste of Balboa several months before officially opening is doors last summer.

Tastes range from $1 to $10. Visit BalboaVillage.com for more information.
